MLB Betting Preview: NY Yankees (76-58) vs. Tampa Bay Rays (74-61)

Rays vs YankeesDate/Time: Tue, Sept 4th/ 07:10:00 PM ET, Tropicana Field, Tampa Bay, Florida

Tonight, two MLB American League East rivals will meet in a decisive divisional matchup when the New York Yankees take on the Tampa Bay Rays for the second of a three game series at Tropicana Field.

The Yankees kicked off a 10-game road trip with a 4-3 loss in Tampa on Labor Day’s night, dropping their advantage over the Baltimore Orioles to just one game.  For the Yankees, who led the East by as much as 10 games in July, the one-game difference is their smallest since June 13th when the team took over the first place in the American League East.

Despite the loss, the Yankees insist there’s nothing to worry about, although, things are not easy for the Bronx Bombers. The Yanks have to play two more games at the Tropicana Field and then head to Baltimore for a crucial four-game set against the Orioles.

Yankees’ starter CC Sabathia recorded eight hits and two walks to allow three runs, giving way to his bullpen with the game tied at 3-3.  The Rays broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth on a two-out rally against David Robertson. Ryan Roberts singled to left and promptly stole second. Chris Gimenez then hit a ground ball for the 4-3 lead.

Meanwhile, Rays’ starter James Shields (13-8) pitched eight strong innings and allowed three runs to record a victory and help Tampa Bay to move within 2½ games of New York.

PITCHING MATCHUP: Yankees RH Freddy Garcia (7-5, 4.90 ERA) vs. Rays RH Alex Cobb (8-8, 4.39)

Right handed pitcher Freddy Garcia (7-5) will take the mound for the Yankees this Tuesday night. Garcia has failed to complete five innings in each of his last two starts and was stuck with a no decision after allowing two runs on four hits in 4 2/3 innings at Cleveland last week. Garcia went 5 1/3 innings against Tampa Bay on July 2, allowing two runs and five hits in a no decision.

24-year Alex Cobb had the best start of his career on Aug. 23 against Oakland with a four-hit shutout but failed to follow that up with a win. Rays RH surrendered two home runs and was charged with four runs and eight hits in 4 2/3 innings at Texas last week. Cobb worked seven innings at New York on June 6, suffering the loss while yielding four runs on five hits.
