The starting positions heading to the 2013 Kentucky Derby have been defined. A group of 21 participants were entered to Wednesday’s draw; marking the 10th straight year the race attracts at least 20 entrants, with a maximum of 20 able to start the event. Fear the Kitten, the 21st horse, won’t be on the starting line this Saturday, but the three year old colt still has the chance to compete if any other horse is forced to leave the race before Friday at 9 a.m. ET.
There will be some changes in this year’s race after 139 years of history. As it was announced by the event organizers, the system to get into the Derby suffered some minor changes. Instead of the traditional system based on who had the most earnings in graded-stakes races, this year’s positions were determined by a tiered points system comprising 36 races, with the emphasis on races at longer distances and later in the spring.

The top three horses according to Churchill Downs’ oddsmakers are Orb, Verrazano and Goldencents. Florida Derby winner Orb is the overall favorite for the 139th Derby at 7-2 odds. Orb will start the race in 16th position.
Orb’s closest rival is the unbeaten Verrazano. Wood Memorial winner is posted second at 4-1, and will break from the 14th position. The third favorite is Goldencents, who is right behind in the odds at 5-1and will start from No. 8.
Trained by Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey, Orb enters this year’s Derby on a four-race winning streak that includes the top position in this year’s Florida Derby.
Considered by most horse betting fans as the top favorite to win the race, Verrazano also enters the Derby holding a four race streak. Wins achieved this year includes March 9th Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II) and April 6th Wood Memorial Stakes (gr. I). Verrazano is the only competitor at this year’s Derby that did not run until Jan. 1st, 2013, so if he wins the Derby then he will become the second horse to win the event without racing as a 2-year-old. The only one in 139th years was Apollo in 1882. Finally, Goldencents, owned by W. C. Racing, Dave Kenney, and University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino's R A P Racing, has three stakes wins in his record: the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes (gr. III), Sham Stakes (gr. III), and Santa Anita Derby (gr. I).
