Yankees’ All Star first Baseman Mark Teixeira is out for the rest of the season. Team officials informed this Wednesday that team physicians determined the torn tendon sheath didn’t heal adequately and the player will need surgery to fix the problem. Recovery time for the surgery is expected to be up to six months. So, sportsbook betting fans, be prepared.
The 33-year old first base and two-time All-Star suffered the injury while hitting off a tee March 5th with the U.S. team at the World Baseball Classic. Teixeira missed 53 games of the regular season, but was able to return to the field on May 31st. He then played in 15 games, batting .151 with three home runs and 12 RBIs, but was shut down again on June15 because of inflammation. He went back on the disabled list after he didn’t respond to a cortisone treatment.
Currently sit in second place in the AL East division, the Yankees have dealing with an unusual amount of injuries this season. Teixeira is one of several stars players moved to the Yankees’ disabled list, but the first to be officially ruled out this season. Derek Jeter hasn't played with the team since suffering a left ankle fracture in the AL championship series opener held in October, 2012. Jeter returned to the field but reinjured his ankle in April during rehabilitation. Third baseman Alex Rodriguez had left hip surgery early this year and is not expected to return before the All-Star break.
Last week, the Yankees announced that 34-year old pitcher Kevin Youkilis, who was traded from Boston to New York during the offseason, will miss 10-12 weeks following back surgery. Youkilis already missed a month with a back issue earlier this season and has been on the Disabled List at least once in each of the last three years.
Outfielder Curtis Granderson was ruled out due to a broken right forearm sustained in his first at-bat at spring training on Feb. 25. After missing the first 38 games of the current season, Granderson returned on May 14th but broke a knuckle when hit by a pitch from Tampa Bay's Cesar Ramos on May 24. Finally, Catcher Francisco Cervelli was also reported out after breaking his right hand April 26 when hit by a foul tip off the bat of Toronto's Rajai Davis.
Yankees will play the Rangers in the third and last game of the series held at Yankee Stadium. After losing the second game of the series on Wednesday night, the team enters Thursday game as a +1.5 underdog according to the latest odds on MLB.
