This Saturday, September 1st, the Miami Hurricanes will kick off the 2012-13 season with a visit to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts for an Atlantic Coast Conference and regular-season opener game against the Boston College Eagles.
While question marks still floating over the University of Miami football program, the Hurricanes, who are in the midst of a rebuilding phase, will try to make a fresh start and put aside the scandals surrounding the football and basketball programs.
In case you’re not familiar with the details surrounding the scandal, former University of Miami football booster Nevin Shapiro, who is currently imprisoned for orchestrating a $930 million Ponzi scheme, allegedly provided football and basketball players with cash, prostitutes and private sex parties and even facilitated an abortion.
Despite the recurrent problems, legal troubles, and other distractions, Coach Al Golden still managed to do a good job considering the situation, leading the Hurricanes to a 6-6 record and 3-5 mark in conference play. But even when the 6-6 record made the Hurricanes eligible for some Bowl action, Miami self-imposed a bowl ban last season. On top of that, Coach Golden also had to deal with the suspension of a number of key players.
But now that Coach Golden does not have to deal with any suspensions or off-field distractions, the team is confident that they can recover this season despite having little experience on the field. As its been previously announced, Miami could line up as many as 12 sophomores or freshmen for this game, including starting QB Stephen, who has started a few games before, primarily in 2010. For his career, Morris has thrown for 1,523 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He’s looking to take full control of the roster after winning the QB battle over backup Ryan Williams in fall camp.
Boston College, the past season was highly frustrating. The Eagles went 4-8 to finish the season to finish in fifth place in Atlantic Division and failed to become bowl-eligible for the first time in 12 years. The only highlight of the season was a 24-17 win on the road against the Miami Hurricanes. The only other Eagle win at Miami was Doug Flutie's Miracle in Miami recorded on November 23, 1984, when BC defeated its rival 47-45 at the Miami Orange Bowl.
However, BC is expecting to do better this season now that Doug Martin has been hired as the Eagles new offensive coordinator. Prior to moving to BC, Martin served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at New Mexico State. Under his command, the Aggies ranked 26th in passing offense and averaged 398 yards of total offense per game.
But without Martin, Boston College simply showed a completely different face. Last season, the Eagles were ranked as the worst offense in the Atlantic Coast Conference and 100th in passing offense in the NCAA.
The Eagles will also use Chase Rettig as their starting quarterback. Last year Retting amounted 1,960 yards passing with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He completed 53% of his passes. As far as defense, BC returns seven starters on the defensive side of the ball. LB Luke Kuechly is now in the NFL and last year he led the nation with 191 tackles.
Game Odds:
Miami Hurricanes: -2-110
Boston College Eagles: +2-110
Game Total: 44, o/u:-110
Miami holds a 23-5 record all-time against Boston College. While the Hurricanes are expected to struggle coming into this season, current odds on college football show the team listed as a -2 point favorite heading into Saturday afternoon’s game against BC.
