2012 NFL Preseason Week 2: NY Jets vs. NY Giants

NY Giants vs NY JetsDate/Time: Sat, Aug 18 / 07:00:00 PM ET, Giants Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey

It is time for the battle of New York.  The defending NFL champs, the New York Giants, will resume their preseason this Saturday night when they pay a visit to their league arch-rival, the New York Jets.

Both teams will try to achieve their first pre-season victory after losing their initial games. The Giants loss by one point (31-32) in their visit to Jacksonville last Friday night, while the Jets couldn’t show fans their new face after falling short to the Cincinnati Bengals 17-6 in Tim Tebow’s official debut with his new team.

While Jets’ starting quarterback, Mark Sanchez, was expected to play only a quarter, all expectations were centered on Tebow. After months of hype, Tebow, who said Friday night that he was most pleased with his game “rhythm”, never found his best game against Cincinnati.  The former Broncos’ QB didn’t show much in his Jets debut, picking up some yards by running around a couple of times, completing only four passes in eight attempts for 27 yards and throwing an interception. But not everything was Tebow’s fault, the rest of the Jets were far from being spectacular, in fact, they were blanked by the Bengals, who repeatedly showed a better offense/defense combination and a more aggressive attitude than their rivals, pre season or not.

Meanwhile, the New York Giants traveled last Friday to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars. Giants’ starters didn’t play much. Starting QB Eki Manning did not see much action against the Jags and was only able to direct a drive into the red zone before settling for a field goal. Manning left the field with 4-of-8 passing in his first game since the Super Bowl victory achieved in February.

Giants backup QB David Carr took over and threw for two touchdowns, giving his team a 10 point lead (24-14) lead before halftime.  The Giants led 31-24 in the fourth quarter, but Jacksonville kicker Josh Scobee nailed a 29-yard field goal. The story changed when Jaguars’ running back, Keith Toston, capped a 64-yard drive with a nine-yard touchdown run with only 2 minutes left on the clock.

Game Odds:
New York Giants: +1-110
New York Jets: -1-110
Game Total: 36, o/u -110

As usual, expectation is high for both teams. NFL Game Odds show a very tight game, with the Jets listed as favorite by only -1 point. The Jets hold a 23-19-1 advantage the all-time preseason series and dealt the Giants a 17-3 loss in last year's matchup. However, the Giants know when to hit its archrival. Manning and Co. achieved a well deserve 29-14 victory on Week 16 last season that propelled the team into playoffs and eventually into a Super Bowl Title.
