The Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants will meet in game two of their four-game series on Friday night at AT&T Park, with the first pitch scheduled for 10:15 ET.
After a 2-5 series opening victory over the Braves on Thursday night, and a three-game sweep vs. Los Angeles Dodgers, the Giants take aim at their longest winning streak since mid July. The four straight victories also cemented the Giants in the first place in the NL West with a three game advantage over the Dodgers. The Giants have won nine of 12 games and are thriving despite the recent loss of outfielder Melky Cabrera after a failed drug test.
Giants' Barry Zito pitched into the ninth inning in the opener of a four-game series against the Braves. The 34-year-old lefty allowed five hits, walked three, struck out five and left after allowing two singles at the top of the ninth for his 10th win of the season. In addition, Zito (10-8) improved his lifetime record against Atlanta to 5-1.
Braves' starter Tommy Hanson took the loss vs. the Giants after 4 1/3 innings. Hanson gave up five hits and five runs while striking out four and walking three. The Braves, one of the two wild card leaders in the National League, have lost five of their last six games. Atlanta ended an ill-timed four-game losing streak in picking up a 5-1 road win over the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night, but suffered back to back losses vs. the Nationals (1-4 and 4-5) and the Dodgers (5-0 and 6-2).
The Braves have slipped to 6 1/2 games behind the first-place Washington Nationals in the NL East but still lead the wild card race. Atlanta has scored just 14 runs in its last six-games and scored its only two runs in Thursday’s loss in the ninth inning.
PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Ben Sheets (4-3, 3.07 ERA) vs. Giants RH Ryan Vogelsong (10-7, 2.85)
Braves’ Ben Sheets has lost three of his last four starts after winning his first three outings. Sheets gave up four homers vs. the Dodgers in his last start, and allowed six runs in six innings. He’s currently 4-3 with a 2.34 ERA in 10 career starts against San Francisco.
Meanwhile, Giants Right Hander Ryan Vogelsong is coming off two outings in which he allowed 11 runs in 5 2/3 innings. Vogelsong received eight runs and nine hits in 2 2/3 innings vs. the Washington Nationals on August 13th, and three runs and eight hits in three-plus innings against the San Diego Padres in his last outing on August 19th. Vogelsong got a no-decision against Atlanta on July 18 when he allowed one run and four hits in six innings. He has an 0.96 ERA in two career appearances against the Braves.
