NFL Betting Preview: Where Are The Tennessee Titans Heading?

Tennessee TitansWhat’s going to happen with the Tennessee Titans this coming season is anyone’s guess. While they’ll likely be in the running for an AFC wild card spot in 2013, you’d be insane to put your money on the Titans unseating Houston as the AFC South champs.

And that’s largely due to their indecisiveness, and a bit of bad luck.

The bad luck? They might have lost wide receiver Kenny Britt due to a DUI arrest over the summer. Not the greatest news for those who love to bet on NFL games, particularly those with the Titans as favorites. The indecisiveness? Who on earth is their starting QB?

For a second there, it looked like Jake Locker would be the starting quarterback, which pretty much puts the team's offensive power in the hand of the rookie. At least if you go by what was tentatively announced in training camp.

But that seemed to change the second Mike Munchak was officially named head coach. He put a kibosh on that plan, instead handing Hasselbeck the starting role. Locker wasn’t pushed completely aside. He was given the chance to gain experience and eventually earning the starting QB title. Actually, never mind, that’s called being pushed aside. Our bad.

At the end of the day, it looks like the Titans are trying to groom a franchise QB, and one of two things will come of this. Either the Titans will start off with a losing record, Munchak will take heat, and odds on NFL will shift in the opposite of favoring the Titans. Or they’ll grab the ball and go like champions, proving that the Mentor/Apprentice strategy is working.

In terms of defense, the loss of cornerback Cortland Finnegan means an already-weak Titan defensive unit is now on way shakier ground, which could lead to equally an equally rocky road for football fans. Sure, the addition of Ayers might help the pass rush a bit, but we’re not too sure those two balance things out that much.

If the Titans had to pick one thing to focus on, defense is it. Their entire defensive game looks weak from every angle, so we think the Titans will find it hard to hold onto leads in games that count.

And if they can hammer down the defense (plus really figure out this whole QB thing) they could be major contenders this season. Remember, the Titans play in a conference that lacks any truly dominate teams, a boon for those looking for solid football point spread opportunities.
