The Blue Jays are depressingly horrible for Toronto fans and sports bettors who had hoped to capitalize on the strong team north of the border before most of their players toppled down onto the DL. The Blue Jays sit at the bottom of the AL East with a 56-65 record
The Tigers? They’re 1.5 games back from a Wild Card spot (Toronto’s 9.5 games back, for the record) and looking very attractive to bandwagon Torontonians looking for a new team to get excited about (Detroit’s just a four hour drive from Canada’s largest city).
PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays LH Ricky Romero (8-10, 5.53 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Max Scherzer (12-6, 4.41)
Tonight, the two teams face off against each other in the first of a 3-game series. Mark Scherzer steps on the mound for Detroit, armed with a 12-6 record and a 4.41 ERA. If history is any indication, Detroit should take game 1. Scherzer is 2-0 with a 1.67 ERA in four career outings against the Jays.
He’s also coming off a 5-1 victory against Minnesota where he struck out 10 in seven innings.
That’s a stark contrast to Ricky Romero, who takes the mound for Toronto. On the same day that Scherzer took control in Minnesota, Romero gave up six runs to Chicago in just over six innings. He’s now 0-9 (yes, 0-9) with a 745 ERA in his last 10 starts.
Game Odds:
Toronto Blue Jays: +1.5 -105, ML +210
Detroit Tigers: -1.5 -115, ML -225
Game Total: 9, o/105, u/-125
Sports bettors looking to capitalize on the Toronto-Detroit series might want to pay attention to what’s happening on the DL. According to Manager John Farrell, Brett Lawrie might leap back to the plate from the disabled list just in time for the series.
And outside the DL, Yunel Escobar and Edwin Encarnacion have been consistent against Cherzer in the last few matchups, pulling through hit after hit against the right-hander.
